"Free" Ticketing Services


If you’ve been searching for a box office ticketing system, I'm sure you've come across a number of companies who advertise their system as "free" or "no cost to you".

Unfortunately, there's very little in this world that is completely free, unless it comes with strings attached. Everyone needs to make a little money to support and develop the services or products they offer, even ticketing companies.

Generally speaking, "free" means that indeed you may not be charged a fee per ticket, monthly charges or any setup fees. But instead, the ticketing company imposes a compulsory service charge or “convenience” fee on the ticket purchaser. And in some cases, this can be up to 10% of the ticket price.

Of course, service charges/convenience fees are quite common in the ticketing industry. But the particular problem with this “free” model is that the venue operator does not have any option to vary (or eliminate) the fee charged. And in many cases, the venue operator would undoubtedly prefer not to add a service charge and absorb the cost of the ticketing service and credit card fees in the ticket price, to avoid any negative backlash from patrons.

The other way that ticketing companies offering a “free” service recover their costs, is by handling the complete payment processing. They will then charge the venue operator a credit card transaction fee of perhaps 5% or more. Not only will you normally not receive funds from ticket sales until after the event has taken place, but you will be paying somewhat higher credit card fees than you could secure by shopping around for payment gateway/merchant account services.
